Penjelasan Integrated Graphics
Suatu graphics disebut integrated bila fungsi graphics itu ada dalam suatu chip yang sekaligus melakukan fungsi komunikasi dengan prosessor, memory, disamping fungsi graphics. Contoh integrated graphics yang digunakan di notebook saat ini di pasaran Indonesia:
- ATI Mobility Radeon HD3200
- Intel Graphics Media Accelerator - GMA ) 900 / 950 / X3100 / X4500M / X4500MHD
- NVIDIA GeForce 9100M / 9400M
- SiS Mirage 3+
- VIA Chrome9
Keuntungan awal dari graphics integrated adalah dari segi konsumsi listrik yang rendah sehingga kapasitas baterai notebook bisa tahan lebih lama. Keuntungan berikutnya dari integrated graphics adalah fisik yang lebih ringkas dan lebih hemat tempat sehingga notebook bisa dibuat lebih tipis atau lebih kecil. Bisa dilihat dibawah gambar dari 2 contoh graphics integrated. Yang kiri adalah dari Intel, sedangkan yang kanan NVIDIA.
Fisiknya hanyalah sebuah chip yang sekaligus merupakan controller prosessor. NVIDIA bahkan lebih hemat lagi dengan menyatukan graphics, controller prosessor, dan controller peripherals dalam satu chips ( Intel saat ini masih terdiri dari 2 chips ). Memory untuk graphics diambil dari memori utama komputer.

Dari segi performance, maka sistem graphics dari ATI dan NVIDIA hingga awal tahun 2009 memimpin dari Intel, SiS, ataupun VIA. Keunggulan performance ini yang dimanfaatkan oleh AMD ( ATI adalah perusahaan milik pabrik prosessor AMD ) dan NVIDIA untuk bersaing melawan dominasi Intel di prosessor.
Penjelasan Dedicated Graphics
Bila pada desktop dan workstation sistem graphics datang dalam fisik yang besar dan ditancapkan ke slot PCI Express, maka sistem graphics dedicated ATI dan NVIDIA untuk notebook fisiknya lebih kecil. Mari kita lihat beberapa contoh gambar graphics notebook.

Sebagian pabrik notebook memilih sistem graphics dedicated ATI dan NVIDIA dibuat dalam bentuk module dengan standard yang dinamakan Mobile PCI EXpress Module ( MXM ). Secara teoritis sistem module ini memungkinkan kita melakukan upgrade graphic card dari yang lama ke yang baru. Kenyataannya tidak semudah itu. Paling tidak di Indonesia, modul graphics MXM tidak mudah ditemukan. Hal teknis dalam hal spesifikasi modul juga ternyata tidak selalu kompatible sehingga kemudahan upgrade juga berkurang.

Pilihan Graphics ATI dan NVIDIA di Notebook
Untuk memberikan indikasi kecepatan graphics kepada pembaca, Tambah.info memilah milah tipe graphics ATI dan NVIDIA. Tabel ini disusun pertama dengan memperhatikan pembagian kelas di website NVIDIA serta menempatkan card dari ATI dengan performance rata rata 3D Mark 06 yang sebanding ke klasifikasi yang sama. Angka 3D Mark 06 dikutip dari website notebookcheck.net.

Angka 3D Mark 06 yang didapat oleh Notebookcheck.net adalah angka rata rata dari banyak benchmark yang dilakukan oleh pihak pihak lainnya. Jika ada angka yang aneh dimana kelihatannya ada graphics yang kelasnya lebih tinggi tapi angka rata ratanya lebih rendah, maka kemungkinannya adalah ada konfigurasi benchmark yang tidak optimum di unit unit yang diuji. Jenis prosessor, jenis memory graphics ( DDR2, GDDR3 atau GDDR5 ) serta besar dan jenis memori utama semuanya mempengaruhi hasil benchmark.
3DMark 06 adalah salah satu dari banyak benchmark dari Futuremark. Benchmark ini mengukur kemampuan sistem menjalankan aplikasi gaming 3D DirectX 9 di komputer kita.
Konfigurasi Graphics Integrated + Graphics Dedicated. Teknologi ATI dan NVIDIA keduanya mendukung penggunaan dua buah graphics dalam satu notebook. Contohnya adalah notebook Apple Macbook Pro Unibody yang menggunakan NVIDIA 9400M integrated graphics dan NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT dedicated graphics dalam satu notebook. Bila kita hendak menghemat listrik, maka kita atur agar kita menggunakan integrated graphics untuk ketahanan baterai maksimal. Bila kita hendak mengedit video atau mengolah graphics, maka graphics dedicatedlah yang digunakan. Asus N10J adalah contoh lain dengan integrated Intel GMA950 dan dedicated NVIDIA 9300M GS dalam satu buah notebook.
Konfigurasi Dua Buah Graphics Dedicated. NVIDIA menyebutkannya konfigurasi ini sebagai SLI. AMD menggunakan nama CrossFire. Keduanya adalah kemampuan menghubungkan dua graphics untuk membagi tugas perhitungan graphics dan mencapai kemampuan bermain game yang lebih tinggi lebih cepat lagi. Saat ini di Indonesia belum ada notebook dengan dual graphics yang dipromosikan secara khusus karena harganya yang tinggi.
Pilihan Graphics Workstation 2D dan 3D
NVIDIA Quadro NVS adalah seri graphics NVIDIA untuk aplikasi bisnis. Contoh dari produk ini adalah graphics Quadro NVS 140M dan 160M di notebook Lenovo ThinkPad dan Dell Latitude. Keunggualn Quadro NVS disini adalah kemampuan menjalankan Dual Display ( dua monitor eksternal ). Konfigurasi ini akan berguna untuk CAD/CAM, serta aplikasi pemantauan harga bursa saham. Optimasi graphic card bisnis ini juga tidak kearah gaming tapi kearah kestabilan menjalankan aplikasi perkantoran.
Kelas graphics untuk aplikasi CAD kelas menengah dan tinggi dilayani oleh seri NVIDIA Quadro FX Mobile Workstation dan ATI Mobility FireGL. Lenovo ThinkPad W500 dan W700 adalah dua contoh notebook dengan graphics FireGL.
